How to export a WhatsApp chat
WhatsApp hides a complete copy of every conversation behind two or three taps. Here is exactly where the export button lives on Android and iPhone, which option to pick, and what to do with the file once you have it.
Every statistic about a WhatsApp conversation — who texts most, when the chat is busiest, who deleted what — starts with the same file: WhatsApp's own chat export. Unlike Instagram, which makes you request a download and wait for Meta to prepare it, WhatsApp generates the export instantly on your phone. The whole process below takes about two minutes.
What a WhatsApp chat export actually is
An export is a plain-text transcript of one conversation: every message with its date, time, and sender, one per line, plus system entries such as members joining or leaving a group. Media is represented two ways depending on the option you choose — as placeholders inside the text, or as the actual photo and video files bundled alongside it. On iPhone the text file travels inside a ZIP archive; on Android you usually get the text file directly.
Two properties matter for everything that follows. First, the export is generated locally, on your device, from data already on it — no server prepares it and nobody is notified. Second, it is per chat: there is no "export everything" button, so you repeat the process for each conversation you want to look at.
How to export a WhatsApp chat on Android
- Open the chat. In WhatsApp, open the one-to-one or group conversation you want to export.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner of the chat screen.
- Tap More. Export chat hides in this second-level menu, which is why most people never find it.
- Tap Export chat.
- Choose Without media. This is the important decision — the next section explains why it is almost always the right one.
- Pick where it goes. The share sheet opens: save it to Files or Drive, email it to yourself, or send it wherever you will open it next. The file is named WhatsApp Chat with followed by the chat's name.
If the chat is very long, WhatsApp may take a few seconds to assemble the file. That pause is normal; it is packaging tens of thousands of messages on the phone itself.
How to export a WhatsApp chat on iPhone
- Open the chat you want to export.
- Tap the name at the top — the contact or group name — to open the chat info screen.
- Scroll down to Export Chat. It sits near the bottom of the info screen, below the media and encryption sections.
- Choose Without Media when WhatsApp asks whether to attach media.
- Save the ZIP. The share sheet offers Save to Files, AirDrop, Mail, and your other apps. Inside the ZIP is a single file called
_chat.txt— that is the export.
You can also start from the chat list: swipe left on a conversation, tap More, then Export Chat. The result is identical.
With media or without media: which should you choose?
Choose Without media for analysis, every time. The text file still records that each photo, video, and voice note was sent, who sent it, and when — media is counted in your statistics either way. What it leaves out is only the image and video data itself, which no statistic needs.
The difference in practice is enormous. A without-media export of a busy group chat is typically a few megabytes of text. The with-media version bundles every photo and video ever sent and can run to hundreds of megabytes, is slower to generate and move around, and — because WhatsApp caps the export by size — actually contains fewer messages: attaching media cuts the history limit from roughly 40,000 messages to roughly 10,000. The only good reason to attach media is making a personal archive, not analyzing a chat.
Where the file lands, and how to get it onto a computer
The export goes wherever the share sheet sends it, and nowhere else — WhatsApp does not keep a copy in the cloud. Reliable routes:
- Save to Files or Drive on the phone, then open it from any device signed into the same account.
- Email or message it to yourself — without media it is small enough for either.
- AirDrop (iPhone to Mac) or a USB cable, if you prefer to keep it entirely off the internet.
Analyzing on the same phone works too: save the export to Files, open the analyzer in your mobile browser, and pick the file from there. Nothing about the process requires a computer.
What to do with the exported file
Upload it to the WhatsApp Chat Analyzer. Drop in the .txt file — or the ZIP exactly as it arrived — and you get the full report: message counts per person, the activity heatmap, night owls, conversation starters, media and deleted-message counts, your signature emojis, response times, and shareable WhatsApp Wrapped story cards.
The file is read inside your browser and never uploaded to a server, which matters: a chat export is one of the most personal files on your phone. If any tool asks you to send it somewhere, ask why — with Stats Insta, you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the analysis still completes.
Troubleshooting: when the export goes wrong
- There is no Export chat option. You are probably on WhatsApp Web or the desktop app, which cannot export. Use the phone app. On Android, remember it is two levels deep: three-dot menu, then More, then Export chat.
- The export seems to hang. Almost always a media-heavy group chat exported with media. Cancel and choose Without media; it should finish in seconds.
- The chat starts mid-history. The export cap, not an error: WhatsApp includes only the most recent ~40,000 messages without media. Older history cannot be recovered from WhatsApp itself.
- You cannot find the file afterwards. Check the destination you picked in the share sheet — Files, Downloads, or your Drive — and search for the chat's name. The file is named after the conversation.
- A group member says they cannot export. Any member of a group can export its full chat from their own phone; no admin rights are needed, and nobody is told.
WhatsApp chat export questions
Can I export a WhatsApp chat without the other person knowing?
Yes. Exporting happens entirely on your own phone, using data already stored on it. WhatsApp sends no notification, leaves no marker in the chat, and the other person has no way to see that an export was made.
Does exporting a chat change or delete the original conversation?
No. An export is a read-only copy. Nothing in the original chat is moved, marked, or deleted, and you can export the same chat as many times as you like.
How much history does a WhatsApp export include?
WhatsApp caps exports at roughly the 40,000 most recent messages when you choose Without media, and far fewer — around 10,000 — when media is attached, because the media files themselves take up the room. For a chat older than the cap, the export simply starts part-way through its history.
Can I export a WhatsApp chat from WhatsApp Web or the desktop app?
No. Chat export only exists in the Android and iPhone apps. WhatsApp Web and the desktop apps can display your chats but cannot generate an export file, so you will need your phone for the two-minute export step.
What format is a WhatsApp chat export, and what exactly do I upload?
A plain text file named "WhatsApp Chat with" followed by the chat's name, ending in .txt. On iPhone it arrives inside a ZIP as _chat.txt. Upload either the .txt or the ZIP exactly as it arrives — Stats Insta reads both, and there is no need to unzip anything yourself.
Export in hand?
Turn that .txt file into message counts, heatmaps, leaderboards and WhatsApp Wrapped cards — free, and entirely in your browser.
